Best Practices for Online Students

Many students find the flexibility of online courses appealing and beneficial. At times however, that same flexibility can cause a challenge. Here are some best practices for the online learner:

  1. Design a Space
    1. Set aside a specific place in your home to complete coursework.
    2. Create an environment where you thrive. For example, if you work best with some noise, make sure you play music!
  1. Schedule Time
    1. Schedule specific time in each day to work on your class or classes. For example, determine that every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. you will work on your math class. Keep the appointment with yourself!
    2. Adjust your schedule weekly based on your responsibilities and course load.
  1. Take Breaks
    1. Ensure you build breaks into your schedule. By taking short breaks every hour, one can enhance productivity.
  1. Set Goals
    1. Set short-term goals throughout the semester. For example, if you know you have a 10- page paper with 7 resources due in five weeks, determine what tasks need to be completed each week in order to submit the paper on time.
  1. Utilize Resources
